Harrisburg, PA September 28, 2013 – For the thirteenth time bikers from across the state gathered on Commonwealth Avenue behind the State Capitol to stage their annual “Ride to Gettysburg” sponsored by A.B.A.T.E. of Pennsylvania. The event raises funds to restore and maintain the Pennsylvania Monuments on the Gettysburg Battlefield.

This year’s ride broke an attendance record with 400 riders. More than $15,000 was raised through contributions from ABATE Chapters and rider registrations along with the sale of gun raffle tickets. This year’s parade marshals were Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Seamus McCaffrey and Senator John Wozniak. Also at today’s ride were Representative’s Harry Readshaw, Dan Moul, and Patty Kim. Former State Representative Teresa Forcier was also in attendance with the AMA Motor Maids.

A ceremony prior to the ride featured the singing of the National Anthem by Scott and Beth Christopher of the Mason Dixon Chapter. Certificates and flags were presented to the various ABATE chapters that had made financial contributions to the event.

The parade was led by the God Bless America Color Guard.

The ride was police escorted the entire way to Battlefield Harley Davidson where the participants received a chicken dinner compliments of Dave and Jen LaVan, owners of Battlefield HD. Jen also presented ABATE with a $1,000 contribution toward the restoration effort.

The participants have come to be known as “Readshaw’s Raiders” on behalf of Representative Harry Readshaw’s efforts with the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association.

We must note that many of the ABATE participants from across the state were also in Harrisburg this past Monday to take part in ABATE’s Lobby Day at the State Capitol. A hearty bunch to say the least and we give them all a tip of the helmet for their hard work. Thanks to everyone who took the time to come out and support this worthwhile project.

The Annual Motorcycle Ride also provides funds to restore the Daniel Lady Farm on Hanover Road. This farm is the northern most Confederate site that has been saved and is in the restoration process. It was a field hospital and protected the left flank of the Confederate line. Please go to to learn the amazing story of this historic site.
