| | 08-03-10 Pilot study offers insight for larger federal investigation of motorcycle crashes PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published the results from a pilot study that tested methodologies to be used in a more in-depth investigation into motorcycle crashes, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports. The larger study is now under way at the Oklahoma Transportation Center, a well-respected research facility, under the supervision of Oklahoma State University (OSU). read more... 08-03-10 The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission offers a 25% discount for motorcyclists who use E-ZPass. Those paying cash for a toll cannot receive the discount. Motorcycle riders must have purchased their E-ZPass through the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to qualify for the discount. 07-29-10 EPA Updating Noise Emission Standards The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has learned that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is updating the regulation that governs all motorcycle noise emissions. The EPA has sent a letter to various private companies located in the USA, that import or build motorcycle exhausts intended for use in the USA, asking the companies to disclose sensitive financial and business plan information, as well as trade secrets. read more... 06-28-10 South Carolina Supreme Court strikes down Myrtle Beach helmet law PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- In a victory against motorcycle discrimination, the South Carolina Supreme Court has struck down a Myrtle Beach, S.C., law that required riders to wear helmets within the city limits, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports. The measure was one of more than a dozen designed to keep motorcyclists out of Myrtle Beach. 05-26-10 FHWA MOTORCYCLE ADVISORY COUNCIL The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently convened its Motorcycle Advisory Council (MAC) to discuss motorcycles and how they relate to the country’s transportation infrastructure, and make recommendations to the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is a member of the MAC and attends all council meetings. In addition to council members, the MAC invites specialists from the government, industry and universities, with the goal of reducing motorcycle crashes and injuries to motorcyclists. They carefully consider the small road signature of motorcycles and the how they interact with the roads, bridges and barriers of this country. The date marks the nineteenth annual worldwide " Ride to Work Day" event. An estimated one million riders become two-wheeled commuters on that day to help demonstrate that riding is an efficient, economical form of personal transportation. Having enough road guards to station along our route helps insure that we all arrive safely and as one group.
